Closing the Gap: Get your Script

Because “knowing your worth” is a vibe, but knowing what to say is a strategy.

Click on the questions to see the answers.

Q: What do I say when a recruiter asks for my “salary expectations” before I even know the job details?

The Script: “I’m really excited to learn more about the role first to understand the full scope of responsibilities. Based on the requirements we’ve discussed so far, what is the budgeted range for this position?”

Why it works: It politely pivots the pressure back onto the company, preventing you from accidentally lowballing yourself in the first five minutes.

Q: How do I handle it when my boss says, “There just isn’t any budget for raises this year”?

The Script: “I understand the current budget constraints. Since a base salary increase isn’t an option right now, I’d like to discuss a scheduled ‘Off-Cycle Review’ in six months or adjusting my benefits package to include extra professional development to reflect my recent performance.”

Why it works: It shows you are a team player but firmly establishes that your increased value still needs to be compensated—if not in cash today, then in equity or time tomorrow.

Q: I feel like a “burden” asking for more money. How do I get past the guilt?

The Mindset Shift: Stop thinking of it as “asking for more” and start thinking of it as Correcting a Transaction.

The Strategy: You aren’t asking for a favor; you are providing a high-level service and ensuring the invoice is correct. We teach you how to treat negotiation like a business meeting, not a personal request.

Q: What if I’m an introvert? I hate “confrontation.”

The Script: “I’ve prepared a summary of my impact over the last year and how it aligns with our department goals. I’d like to walk through these numbers with you to ensure my compensation is aligned with the current market value for this role.”

Why it works: It moves the focus off you and onto the data. It is much easier to defend a spreadsheet than it is to feel like you are “bragging.”

Q: I’m landing a new job. Is it actually okay to negotiate the first offer?

The Script: “I am thrilled about the offer and the team. Based on my research and the specific expertise I’m bringing in [Skill X], I was expecting a range closer to [Number]. Is there flexibility to bridge that gap?”

Why it works: Over 80% of recruiters expect a counter-offer. If you don’t ask, you are essentially leaving a “signing bonus” on the table.
